Water Lily

Water Lily emphasizes how light has a relationship with all living elements in nature. This relationship and connection between life brought about the idea of creating a small ecosystem with the fish, lily pads and water being portrayed alongside the water lily. Since the water lily is symbolic of peace, the flower enhances the connotations of tranquility and light. The lights and the movement are synced so that the center leaves close in once the light dims away and move farther from the center as the light brightens. Since the piece sits on the ground, the viewer is able to imagine the water with the water lily sitting above as it would be in nature. It also takes away the anthropocentric approach to galleries with many things at eye level. Since sunlight is one of the most important elements for the survival of many species, it is the focal point of the flower. The light showing how life, in this case the water lily, reacts to its presence. The energy that sunlight creates and the meditative quality that comes along with it is why I wanted to focus on the idea of how sunlight connects with life like the water lily.

These images are considering the concept of Dystopia vs. Utopia by glimpsing death in one hand and a form of "the fountain of youth" in the other. The stark contrast brings about a sense of otherworldliness even if these objects are seen in our current lives. The Utopias scene is meant to focus on the beauty that nature brings through life, light, and water. I considered the story of the fountain of youth to encourage the theme of Utopia and the human longing to live forever. The Dystopian scene exaggerates the concept of death and what it means to leave pieces behind. The cold and still images are set in a very desolate area to accentuate the prospect of death and loneliness.

I chose to concentrate on creating 3D models of objects with a variety of textures and materiality. I see or use these objects daily and they are scattered throughout the room. The lighting used in the renders accentuates the material on each object. The background, though dark and simple, helps the viewer to concentrate on the object in place.

Even with there being a greater emphasis on the pollution of our oceans, we still aren’t doing enough to fix our errors. Most people only really decide to make a change when they are personally effected by something. In this project, I wanted to give a glimpse into what the ocean life deals with on a daily basis. We are seeing just how much our environment is being negatively transformed with the amount of trash that ends up in the ocean. The viewer is forced to question their role in the matter at hand and pushed to make a change.

Project 1: Evolve or Die

The impact of plastic pollution on the environment is striking as it effects every element of our lives. I decided to focus more on the impact of wildlife because of our negligence to focus on things that we are not confronted by as a human race on a daily basis.
By looking through the lens, we are focusing our attention on how much plastic has changed the natural environment for the ocean life. The blurry effect makes it difficult for us to identify what is trash and what is food which is what these ocean species have to face. It can be a case of life or death. The black light not only helps the trash bags to emulate the bright green color of the kelp, but also shows an even greater toxic quality to the plastic itself. Its unnaturally florescent green color can only be seen through the physical act of looking for it with the black light. Animals, such as turtles who mistaken plastic bags for jellyfish, are not given the luxury of a tool to identify the poison that floats in front of them. The elements of this project come together in order to see the difficulties that ocean life faces through their point of view.
